Apple Intelligence is finally here, and it’s bringing a whole new era of AI right to your iPhone. With the iOS 18.1 update, you’re getting a bunch of AI-driven features that can transform the way you talk, work, and create—all from the palm of your hand.

The tech giant’s new AI powerhouse is set to roll out across newer iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and pretty much every device they release moving forward. We’ve all watched generative AI in action, whether it’s clumsily churning out text with tools like Co-Pilot or ChatGPT, or producing those awkward six-fingered images. But at the same time, we’ve also been blown away by how fast AI technology is getting better.

“Apple Intelligence introduces a new era for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, delivering brand-new experiences and tools that will transform what our users can accomplish,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO in October.

He added: “Apple Intelligence builds on years of innovation in AI and machine learning to put Apple’s generative models at the core of our devices, giving our users a personal intelligence system that is easy to use — all while protecting their privacy.”

But, as with most things Apple, actually getting started can feel a bit like jumping through hoops. Don’t worry, though. Here’s the lowdown on how to get access to Apple Intelligence and start making the most of these new tools.

How to start using Apple Intelligence?

To get started, you’ll need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. If you’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or anything in the iPhone 16 family—iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max—you’re good to go. Just make sure you’ve updated your device to iOS 18.1 first.

Once you’re up to date, head into Settings and tap on Apple Intelligence & Siri. There, you’ll find the option to join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist. Signing up might mean waiting a few hours before you can dive in, but hang tight – you’ll get a notification when it’s ready.

After you’ve been approved, simply activate Apple Intelligence, and your device will automatically fetch the on-device AI models. Within no time, you’ll be all set to explore Apple’s latest AI-powered features right at your fingertips.

Apple Intelligence isn’t available in the EU or China just yet. However, you can switch your device’s region to the United States to give it a spin.

How to use Apple’s AI on iPhone

Only the iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models get to tap into Apple Intelligence. If you’re still using a regular iPhone 15 or something older, it’s definitely worth updating to iOS 18.1 anyway, but just keep in mind you won’t be able to use these new AI features. Your device’s language also needs to be set to U.S. English.

Features include Image Playground, where you’ll be able to generate AI images via a prompt, or Visual Intelligence, which will allow you to search the web for what’s in your camera’s real-life viewfinder.

With the AI at work, Siri feels a lot more natural and personal. You can still use your voice, of course, but now you can also type out requests if that’s more convenient. Plus, Siri’s product knowledge can help you out with questions about your iPhone and other Apple gear.

Siri’s also become a lot more patient with those little speaking hiccups we all have. Let’s say you start by asking, “Siri, set an alarm—wait, no, sorry, I meant a timer for 10 minutes—actually, let’s make that 15.” Siri knows exactly what you’re trying to do and will just set the 15-minute timer without a fuss.

When Siri is active, you’ll see a glowing light around the edge of your screen, but you can still scroll or type while chatting with Siri in the meantime.

Your iPhone now summarizes long notifications—texts, emails, and certain app alerts—helping you quickly catch up. Though often handy, it sometimes misunderstands humor, as shown in Apple Intelligence fail threads on Reddit. It works with third-party apps like Slack and WhatsApp. If annoyed, just easily disable “Messages” in Settings for convenience.

How to use new AI feature on Mac

Apple Intelligence is rolling out to iPad and Mac users too—just make sure you’ve updated to iPadOS 18.1 or macOS Sequoia 15.1, depending on your device.

At launch, Apple Intelligence will be available in most regions with Siri and your device language set to U.S. English. If you need more details, check out the Apple Intelligence requirements.

If you’re on a Mac and want to get in line, head to the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and go to Apple Intelligence & Siri. From there, you can join the Apple Intelligence Waiting List. Apple will ping you when your Mac is good to go.

But it’s worth mentioning that Apple Intelligence is still in beta. Because it’s using generative models, you might run into inaccuracies, unexpected responses, or even some content you find offensive. It’s all part of the early-stage experience, so just keep that in mind while you’re exploring.

What can we do with Apple Intelligence?

The smarter features is said to be able to help users write better with tools that rewrite, proofread, and summarize text in places like Mail, Messages, Notes, and even third-party apps. As we’ve said, Siri also gets a serious makeover, becoming more natural, conversational, and flexible in a bid to compete with the likes of ChatGPT. You can talk, type, or switch between both, and Siri keeps up even if you stumble over your words. Plus, Siri now has a ton of Apple product knowledge, making it easy to learn new tricks or settings. According to sources, the company plans to unveil the revamped ‌Siri‌ as early as 2025.

The Photos app gets smarter, too. Just describe what you’re looking for, and it’ll help you find the right photo or video. The Clean Up tool can remove unwanted objects in the background, and you can even create a memory movie from a description.

Apple is pushing the idea of privacy, especially as Generative AI is training from all your stuff. The company says that much of the processing happens on your device, and when it doesn’t, Apple’s “Private Cloud Compute” still keeps your data protected. More goodies, like custom emojis and integrated ChatGPT, are on the way.

When can you use Apple Intelligence?

The first wave of Apple Intelligence features is already here as a free update with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. To access them, just make sure your device and Siri are set to U.S. English, and you’ll be good to go in most regions. Even if you’re in the European Union and using a Mac, you can still enjoy Apple Intelligence in U.S. English with macOS Sequoia 15.1. In October, ReadWrite reported that beta versions of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS 15.2 had been rolled out to developers.

Come April, iPhone and iPad users in the EU will start getting Apple Intelligence features too. This includes all the big stuff—Writing Tools, Genmoji, a revamped Siri with smarter language understanding, ChatGPT integration, and much more.

Meanwhile, this month, Apple Intelligence will be rolling out to localized English versions in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. Then in April, a software update will add support for an even wider range of languages, with more to follow throughout the year. Expect to see Chinese, English (India and Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, and others join the list.

In terms of devices, Apple Intelligence will work on iPads running A17 Pro or M1 chips and newer, as well as Macs with M1 or later.

The tech giant’s approach to open-source AI comes with several advantages: attracting top talent, benefiting from community contributions, fostering standardization, reducing costs, building goodwill, and aligning with business models that aren’t entirely dependent on AI products.

While the model is described as “open weight,” meaning its weights are accessible, it doesn’t provide the complete toolkit needed for full reproduction. eBay continues to be a tried and trusted classic, with it having launched in 1995 – before the internet was even a common fixture in households.

The website was the first in its kind and whilst it launched primarily as an auction forum, it has evolved over the years. It’s the second most visited shopping website among US buyers, behind Amazon.

In quarter one of 2024 alone, the company reported revenue of $2.556 billion. The same quarter saw 132 million active buyers on the platform, maintaining the same number of active buyers from the previous year.

Its most popular categories include smartphone accessories, clothing, fashion, and home decor.

TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop has taken the online shopping world by storm since its inception. Over 150 million people use the app in the United States, with the ‘Shop’ being easy to see and reach on the main homepage.

The US TikTok Shop opened in September of 2023 and while it’s not a selling platform for getting rid of unwanted items, it has become a major revenue stream for small and medium-sized businesses, entrepreneurs, and creators.

The brand has hosted several live shopping events, including features from popular celebrities like Nicki Minaj and the D’Amelio family as they promote their products.

Some brands have hit new records and earned $1 million in sales in one day, with L’Oreal Paris securing more than $1M in sales on TikTok Shop’s Super Brand Day.

Craigslist

It’s often been dubbed as the website and app where you can buy absolutely anything that crosses your mind. It does look fairly basic, especially compared to the others, but it does the job.

Founded in 1995, the platform is still being used widely with new listings being seen on a consistent basis.

Poshmark

Poshmark is a leading social marketplace that focuses on new and secondhand fashion for women, men, kids, pets, and homes.

It has over 80 million community members across the US, Canada, and Australia and 200 million items for sale.

Like the others, it works by users snapping images of their unwanted items and then placing them on the platform. Although it has a large market for most things, the designer and on-trend pieces tend to perform well.

The RealReal

Unlike the other online selling apps already listed, The RealReal focuses solely on the resale of luxury goods. It’s not for stores though, but for individuals who wish to sell on pieces they have previously loved but not gotten enough wear out of.

It aims to give new life to luxury items, with the company including hundreds of experts and a proprietary algorithm to evaluate thousands of items daily.

Over 37M members are signed up to The RealReal, with 77,778 metric tons of carbon saved due to its sustainable approach in tackling the fashion industry which is one of the most wasteful.

ThredUP

ThredUP is another fashion-based resale marketplace. It’s not luxury-focused, but it does lean towards high-quality pieces and it features premium and designer categories.

In an interview with Vogue Business, the secondhand platform stated the resale market will be worth $350 billion by 2027 as it’s expected to be boosted by Gen Z consumers,

“Gen Z is a digitally native generation. Their communication, entertainment and shopping habits are all mobile-first so it makes sense that this generation is leading the growth of the market,” says Thredup president Anthony Marino.

In data released by the company, brands like Patagonia, Lululemon, Reformation, North Face, and Vuori are amongst the most popular in the market.

It’s that time again—when tech experts share their predictions for where innovation will take us in the coming year. AI is set to play a starring role once again. Back in December 2023, Bill Gates made a bold claim about AI’s trajectory, saying, “we are 18-24 months away from significant levels of AI use by the general population.” Looking at how ChatGPT has taken off and how Apple, Google, and Microsoft are weaving AI into tools for both consumers and businesses, it’s safe to say he wasn’t far off.

Now, as we look ahead to 2025, another big name in AI has stepped up with some intriguing forecasts. Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face—a popular AI platform used by millions of developers and major players like Intel and Qualcomm—has shared his predictions for the year. Among his most surprising? He believes 2025 will see “the first major public protest related to AI.”

Delangue’s track record is solid—his 2024 predictions, like rising awareness around the monetary and environmental costs of AI, were spot on. He shared his latest predictions on LinkedIn and X in a straightforward list. However, he didn’t dive deep into how people might react to the rapid evolution of these technologies.

With that in mind, here’s our take on what to expect in the world of AI in 2025.

AI protests and copyright issues

Recent controversies around AI adoption suggest growing tensions that could spark major pushback in 2025. Whether it’s protests over AI taking jobs en masse—imagine something similar to that of the Occupy Wall Street movement—or concerns about how police, government agencies, or healthcare systems might misuse AI, the stage is set for a clash of perspectives.

Here’s my one prediction for AI in 2025 (& a review of how my 2024 prediction turned out).

Another big spotlight in 2025 will be on the intersection of AI and copyright. In the U.S., a wave of lawsuits over AI and intellectual property is already in motion. George Washington University has compiled an extensive overview of these cases, showcasing just how complex this area has become. Meanwhile, Europe has been slower to see AI copyright disputes land in court. That began to shift in 2024, and key appeals are expected to be decided in 2025.

The groundbreaking EU AI Act, which officially came into force in August 2024, haven’t kicked in yet, so companies have been hustling to prepare.

In February, Chapters I and II of the AI Act took effect, banning AI systems that manipulate consciousness or use deceptive techniques to coerce decisions people wouldn’t normally make.

By May, non-binding codes of practice will be released to help companies better align with the AI Act’s requirements and clarify its interpretation.

Next August, a broader set of rules will come into play, including regulations for general-purpose AI models, oversight of notified bodies, governance standards, confidentiality measures, and penalties for non-compliance.

The year ahead promises to be crucial for shaping how AI is integrated into society while balancing innovation, ethics, and accountability.

AI agents

2025 is shaping up to be a breakout year for AI agents. If you’re not familiar, AI agents are like personal assistants powered by artificial intelligence. They can assess their environment, understand interactions, and tackle specific tasks for you.

These AI agents are set to become even more prominent as the major players in tech ramp up their conversational AI wars. Digital assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant are getting serious upgrades. Alexa will integrate Claude, Siri is set for yet another overhaul, and Google Gemini will fully take over Google Assistant, turning it into a conversation-first powerhouse.

While traditional large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT work by generating responses from pre-existing training data, AI agents take things further. They can access external tools and systems to gather fresh, real-time information. This doesn’t make them fully autonomous—they still depend on human design, training, and input—but it gives them a huge edge in functionality.

AI agents are great at breaking down a query and figuring out how to deliver the best possible solution by using various tools (including other AI systems). For example, imagine planning a business trip: an AI agent could coordinate your flights, accommodations, and agenda, and even consider factors like traffic and luggage restrictions. It doesn’t just suggest options—it could also go ahead and book everything for you, creating a seamless, efficient experience. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agrees, stating that AI agents are going to “really transform things” in 2025, and thinks that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is just around the corner, with a breakthrough to come next year.

Putting a face to AI

Bryan Catanzaro, Nvidia’s Vice President of Applied Deep Learning Research, predicts that 2025 will bring AI that’s not just smarter but also more emotionally responsive, creative, and diverse. “Rapid advances in AI are making image and video outputs much more photorealistic, while AI-generated voices are losing that robotic feel,” he explains in a blog.

AI videos will go mainstream by 2025.

Not just because they’re hyper realistic or can mimic actors.

This leap forward will come from better algorithms, richer datasets, and a growing understanding among companies that for AI to resonate with eight billion people, it needs a relatable face and voice. The result? A shift from rigid, turn-based AI interactions to fluid, natural conversations that feel more like talking to a person than exchanging inputs with a machine.

Microsoft’s AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, shares a similar vision. In a recent report by ReadWrite, he talked about a future where AI has “infinite memory” and evolves into an extraordinary teacher, doctor, and life companion. “That’s why it’s a copilot,” he says, referring to Microsoft AI’s Copilot project, which is designed to act as a “consigliere”—a wise advisor helping people achieve their full potential.

What sets Copilot Vision apart, he says, is its ability to behave like a genuine friend rather than a simple yes-man. Suleyman highlights how powerful it is when AI occasionally pushes back, offering constructive feedback instead of just going along with everything. “When it occasionally pushes back on you, that’s a profound moment because a true friend would do that,” he says.

AI has a reverse effect on financials

Delangue predicts a major shakeup in 2025 for tech firms, suggesting that a “big company will see its market cap divided by two or more because of AI.” His point? A breakthrough in AI could upend a core technology or business model for a major corporation—similar to how the internet disrupted the newspaper industry by gutting print advertising revenue.

While the AI industry has enjoyed years of relentless optimism, 2024 was a reality check for some big players. A few AI-related companies faced sharp declines in their stock market performance. That said, many bounced back quickly, highlighting the resilience and confidence in the sector. With tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft making massive investments in AI, there’s no doubt that the technology will continue to grow rapidly in 2025.

Take Nvidia, for example. The company, which designs GPUs and produces most of the chips powering AI systems, saw its stock drop by 25% in mid-2024. But in the bigger picture, this was just a blip—Nvidia’s stock had skyrocketed by about 200% earlier in the year and later recovered, hitting new highs.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, experienced something similar. Its stock peaked in July 2024, took a steep dive in October, and has since started to bounce back. Alphabet’s heavy investments in AI, including its autonomous Waymo taxi service and the Gemini AI chatbot, are clear indicators of its commitment to staying at the forefront of this evolving space.

The message for 2025? While there might be disruptions, the AI industry isn’t slowing down—it’s gearing up for even bigger leaps forward.

AI chip wars

Let’s talk about AI chips. The race to dominate the chip market is heating up, and 2025 is going to crank things into high gear. All the major players—Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Apple—are battling for the top spot in power, efficiency, AI capabilities, and battery life. Intel is entering a tricky phase, and rumors are swirling that Nvidia might finally jump into the desktop CPU market. But let’s be honest—Apple is still the one setting the gold standard.

Apple completely redefined expectations with its M1 chip back in 2020, leaving every other chip maker scrambling to catch up, especially in laptops (and to some extent, desktops). Qualcomm made a solid play in 2024 with its X Elite line, arguably the best response to Apple Silicon so far. However, it’s still unclear if devices running on X Elite are hitting it big just yet. What’s obvious, though, is that Intel, Qualcomm, and Apple are finally delivering what laptop users care about most: power and efficiency.

Looking ahead to 2025, we can expect some big leaps forward. Battery life for both Windows and Mac laptops is projected to soar to nearly 30 hours—a huge win for anyone who’s constantly on the go. On top of that, the next generation of chips will make running large generative AI models locally a breeze, opening up exciting new possibilities for portable computing.

Even with all this innovation, it’s hard to imagine anyone dethroning Apple as the leader in this space. They’ve consistently raised the bar, and I wouldn’t bet against them leading the way again in 2025.

AI robots (not to be confused with agents)

Delangue’s third prediction takes us into the exciting arena where software meets hardware: “At least 100,000 personal AI robots will be ordered,” he says. This lines up perfectly with developments from companies like Tesla and Figure. It’s also in step with Elon Musk’s ambitious vision for humanoid robots, including plans to deploy them on Tesla production lines.

That said, don’t expect to see intelligent robots instantly flooding homes, restaurants, service areas, or factories. These use cases aren’t quite here yet, but they’re closer than you might think. With aging populations and shrinking labor pools, governments and industries are increasingly exploring physical automation as a solution.

The rollout will be gradual, but in 10 years, personal and industrial AI robots could become as commonplace as the iPhone is today. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the not-so-distant future, where robots could become part of our daily lives.

The end of wearables

Here’s the thing – every AI wearable maker who tried to sell us a standalone AI device in 2024 needs to hear this loud and clear—it was the wrong move. Their struggles proved a simple truth. While artificial intelligence is a game-changing feature when integrated into larger apps and products, it just doesn’t hold up as the sole basis for a dedicated device.

Let’s face it, tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini shine when they’re part of the devices we already love—our phones, laptops, and tablets. Nobody’s clamoring to carry or wear yet another gadget just for AI.

The standalone devices like Humane AI, Rabbit R1, Friends, and Plauds? They’re not making it through 2025. The silver lining is the AI powering these gadgets—their “brains,” if you will—will probably find a second life as apps on our trusty iPhones and Androids, where they truly belong. It’s all about keeping AI where it’s most useful – right at our fingertips.

Assisting other industries

Delangue believes there are some interesting breakthroughs ahead in AI for biology and chemistry, especially in areas like drug molecule discovery. He also suggests that China will “start to lead the AI race,” a development likely to catch the attention of the U.S. government and others keeping a close eye on global AI dominance. On a personal note for Delangue’s company, he anticipates its user base of “AI builders” will more than double, growing from 7 million to 15 million in 2025.

We’re also poised to see AI make big strides in construction, engineering, and design, where specialized generative AI models will boost efficiency and spark innovation.

AI may help analyze vast amounts of data from onsite sensors and cameras to streamline project timelines and budgets in construction. By continuously evaluating reality capture data (like lidar and photogrammetry), it will give insights that improve quality, safety, and compliance. The result? Fewer errors and safer worksites.

For engineers, AI will use physics-informed neural networks to speed up solutions for flood prediction, structural engineering, and airflow optimization. This means faster, more precise design iterations tailored to specific spaces, from a single room to an entire building.

In design, tools like retrieval-augmented generation will help architects ensure compliance with local building codes right from the start of the design process. Meanwhile, diffusion AI models will make conceptual design faster and more dynamic.

While some stick around and become a monumental moment, others pass by just as quick as they came up.

In the year when TikTok embraced live shopping, Hawk Tuah girl became a celebrity overnight, and AI hit the mainstream, social media has seen a lot.

The short-form video platforms have performed well, while new entries like Bluesky are starting to make some moves in the industry. But let’s look at what shouldn’t be taken into next year as we round up the seven worst social media trends of 2024.

Engagement Farming

As people are vying for clicks and attention, engagement farming has become a huge problem across a number of social media platforms in 2024.

The practice involves using manipulative strategies to increase engagement metrics like comments, shares, and likes. It’s often very click-bait focused and while it generates high engagement, it becomes more about quantity over quality.

X owner and technology entrepreneur Elon Musk spoke out about the practice on his platform as he even made adjustments to prevent it from happening. In October, he curtailed the use of bold text and other formatting from appearing on timelines due to it being ‘abused for engagement farming.’

He’s not the only one to be affected by it either, as the Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in October: “…We’ve seen an increase in engagement-bait on Threads and we’re working to get it under control. More to come.”

Even well-known companies have tried their hand at engagement farming-related tactics, like the ‘look between y and i’ trend which was replicated across a number of brand accounts.

Gallon challenge

Every year, trends appear that are more dangerous than entertaining. This year has seen several variations take place including the ‘gallon challenge’ which has had a resurgence after first being made popular on the MTV series Jackass.

It’s where people try to drink an entire gallon of milk within 60 minutes without vomiting. While that doesn’t sound too bad at first glance, the average human stomach’s capacity is around 1.5 liters which is less than half a gallon.

As you’d expect, it’s left people feeling ill as the body attempts to deal with getting rid of the new contents.

AI Content

Although many can argue artificial intelligence has become helpful in their day-to-day life, its emergence has led to a huge influx of AI-related content and comments.

A recent study has found that 54% of long posts on LinkedIn are likely to be AI-generated. This type of content surged from January to February 2023, coinciding with ChatGPT’s release.

While its usage has allowed people to create more content than they may have done previously, there appears to be a slight disconnect taking place on platforms as the human connection is overtaken by technology.

Rage-baiting

Rage-baiting can be classed as another form of engagement farming, but some users are going all in on the trend as it can generate high returns.

It’s seen on platforms like X, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook and unlike its click-baiting counterparts, it involves purposefully making people angry.

It does so by stating a controversial opinion or enacting or detailing a fake scenario – just to enrage people which leads to a high view count along with masses of comments.

This growth in the trend throughout the year has come as social media platforms invest more into payment programs for creators. It’s through these programs that people are awarded huge amounts of money for generating engagement.

A TikTok creator based in New York, named Winta Zesu, told the BBC she had earned $150,000 from posting on social media. 

One of her series is named ‘Pretty girl’ which documents the life of a model in the big city whose main problem is being too pretty, but some viewers don’t realize she’s playing a character.

‘Chroming’

Another dangerous social media trend that has unfortunately gained traction in 2024 is what’s known as ‘chroming.’

This involves someone inhaling dangerous chemicals, with the trend seeing people inhale the inside of aerosol cans, paint, or even cleaning products.

Not only can it cause brain damage, cardiac arrest, addiction, respiratory issues, and liver and kidney damage, but the trend has led to teenage deaths.

An 11-year-old in the UK died due to the trend, as did a 13-year-old in Australia who suffered a cardiac arrest after inhaling chemicals.

In an interview with LADBible, the American physician Dr. Michael McKinney explained the horrors behind the trend: “The use of inhalants may lead to the sudden failure of the heart commonly known as ‘sudden sniffing death syndrome’ and this may happen to a first-time user of the product.”

Out-of-touch influencers

Although influencing is still a relatively new career, its appeal has changed. While it isn’t dying out already, it is evolving.

Some influencers are facing criticism from social media users for being ‘out of touch,’ as a mass appeal for more authenticity has been called.

A number of moments have occurred, including when UK YouTuber and TikToker Anastasia Kingsnorth was sharing news about free shipping from a clothing boutique if people spend £1,000 (roughly $1,271).

That caused shock waves to run through social media, as people suggested they would be spending that money on bills instead of clothing while others commented they don’t earn that amount in a month.

This has resulted in micro-influencers being on the rise. These are people who also create content, but they have between 10,000 and 100,000 followers. Some view these accounts as being more genuine as their lives tend to be more relatable.

Every other day there appears to be a new social media video asking for recommendations for ‘comfy’ and ‘relatable’ creators.

Saturation of short-form content

With the rise of TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and reels taking over the algorithm on Instagram, there is short-form content everywhere you look online.

While this has scratched an itch that was needed and has many benefits, it has entirely overtaken long-form content – with many opting against creating that in favor of this new trend.

It’s led to creating an environment that feels more fleeting as it’s just a constant doom-scrolling situation.

The reason why short-form content has dominated this year is said to be because of two reasons – attention spans have dropped to just eight seconds on average and the rapid adoption of 5G has enabled faster video consumption.

The video commerce platform Firework found that 56% of videos created by businesses are now under two minutes, showing that even corporations are following the trend.

The format is found to not be so favorable for our attention spans or positive emotions either, as a study finds “switching between videos and within the video, however, led not to less boredom but more boredom; it also reduced satisfaction, reduced attention, and lowered meaning.”

The Nintendo Switch, released in March 2017, revolutionized handheld gaming. The ability to play games on the go and then swap into docked mode to play on the TV felt like one of those “why didn’t someone invent this years ago” moments.

It continued to maintain momentum as the go-to handheld console for years, with many key games being released on the device. This marked a huge shift for Nintendo, which is no slouch, but it failed to capitalize on third-party games in quite the same way before the Switch. The day Bethesda released Skyrim on the Switch, you knew it had truly cemented its spot in the console pantheon.

Then, in October 2021, Nintendo released the Switch OLED. This version took the completely opposite direction to their previous 2019 iteration on the console: the Switch Lite, which is a smaller, more compact version of the Switch with one major catch – it can’t be docked with a TV. It’s a smaller, entirely handheld version of the console.

The Switch OLED strikes a balance between handheld and docked play. Its main feature is its larger, better screen which makes handheld play more satisfying, but it can still dock with a TV for stationary gaming.

However, it’s worth getting into the specific differences between the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch OLED, because a larger screen isn’t the only thing that differentiates the consoles.

The price will naturally be a huge factor in any large purchase decision like a games console. The Switch OLED is, as you’d expect, more expensive than the original Switch, and is more expensive than the Switch was at launch. The original Switch has also had a small price drop since the launch of the OLED, increasing the price difference between the two options.

Most big box retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, as well as Amazon and other online stores, currently have a bundle with a console and a copy of Mario Kart 8. The exact price will vary depending on the store and whether you buy the console with or without a bundled game or accessories, but the OLED version will usually come in at around $50 more than the original version.

Design/layout

The OLED Switch looks extremely similar to the regular Switch – they even both come with red and blue JoyCons by default, though you can get both devices in other colors. The JoyCons are actually completely interchangeable so if you’ve got a favorite color combination, you can swap them in and out as needed.

They have the same button layouts too, with the controversial YXAB layout that snags every single PlayStation or Xbox player.

The main difference in design is of course the screen. The original Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD panel screen; absolutely no slouch when it comes to portable gaming displays, but the OLED version has it beat with its 7-inch variant.

The console isn’t actually too much larger because the screen claws back some real estate by cutting down the thick black bezels around the edge – it’s just 0.13 inches longer.

OLED screens are more vibrant than LED ones – particularly when it comes to darker colors like black. Blacks on an LED often look washed out and more like grey, whereas OLEDs can provide a much deeper black. There are some good comparison videos online, but you will see even more of a difference in person.

Unfortunately, it’s not as straightforward as downloading an app from the eShop. Let’s have a look at what your options are for streaming Netflix content on your Switch. Be warned. It’s pretty limited.

First, let’s address the current situation: as of now, Netflix does not have an official app available for the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other streaming platforms like Hulu or YouTube, which do have dedicated apps, Netflix hasn’t made its way over yet. But where this is a will there is a way. There are still ways to enjoy your favorite Netflix shows, though it just requires a little workaround.

But why not just use the Switch’s web browser? Technically, the Switch does have a browser but it’s not exactly Google Chrome. There’s no official way to just open a browser and go to Netflix.com, at least not without some serious workaround steps involving DNS settings that can be tricky to configure and may not be worth the effort, especially considering that it can be inconsistent at best.

The Switch itself won’t be playing Netflix, but if you’ve got your TV hooked up for console gaming, you can easily use another device to stream Netflix and get a similar experience without much hassle. While this might not be the answer Switch users were hoping for, it’s still a straightforward way to enjoy Netflix alongside your console setup.

Other options

If you’re really keen on getting Netflix on a handheld gaming device and aren’t wedded to the Switch as the only option, the good news is there are alternatives. I’ve happily streamed Netflix to my deck with absolutely no issues.
